Drawing Foundations: Proportions, Textures, Foreshortening, and Depth of Field

This class is part of a six-session course designed to develop foundational drawing skills, including explorations of line, proportion, contrast, tone, and perspective. Each class begins with drawing vocabulary, theory, and principles of drawing, and is followed by drawing exercises that translate what we see: objects, the figure, interiors, and nature.

PROPORTIONS, TEXTURES, FORESHORTENING, AND DEPTH OF FIELD
In this class, students will explore scale in context to depth and space.
  • 18 x 24 Newsprint pad for drawing/charcoal
  • Compressed charcoal sticks, medium
  • Drawing pencils
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Small notebook

Full course description:
1. Introduction to Composition: cropping using the viewfinder technique.
2. Gesture and Line: drawing from life, and still life: Foreshortening and capturing a pose.
3. Development of Composition: understanding contrast and tone.
4. Proportions, Textures, Foreshortening, and Depth of Field. Includes a home assignment.
5. Rendering and Crosshatching: developing techniques. Includes a home assignment.
6. Finished Drawing: Students will create a completed composition using skills learned, and also bring in completed home assignments for review.
